A TIME for PHYSICS FIRST: Proteges

Forms for Proteges: Graduate Application 2007      Re-enrollment Form 2007

What is a protege?

A 9th grade science teacher who is interested in taking part in the A TIME for Physics First program, and is willing to work with a current participant during the 2006-2007 academic year. This is the only method by which a teacher may enter the A TIME for Physics First program at this time.

The Protege program is primarily intended for teachers in districts that have participated in the A TIME for Physics First program in 2006. We will have a limited number of openings for proteges in the 2007 summer academy. If all spots are not filled by current districts, we will accept participants from new districts. In all cases, those who have attended PLT meetings will be given preference over those who have not. Preference will be given in the following order: (1) Proteges from current districts, particularly from schools where there is only one Physics First teacher at present (2) Proteges from other districts.

What must a teacher do to be considered a protege?

  • A protege should be a 9th grade science teacher who will teach a full year of physics in 9th grade (currently or by 2007-08).
  • S/he should submit a protege application form. The forms will be processed as they arrive, and coach-mentors in the geographic area will contact the applicant regarding the PLT s/he should attend.
  • S/he should then work closely with a 9th grade science teacher who was a A TIME for Physics First participant in Summer 2006.
  • S/he should attend Physics First Professional Learning Team (PLT) meetings during the 2006-07 academic year. The protege should keep a record of PLT meetings attended, should that be needed at a later date.
  • S/he should plan to attend the 2007 and 2008 A TIME for Physics First Summer academies.
  • Participants and their districts will sign commitment forms similar to those used in 2006, which will be sent to each applicant (Phase 2 form).
  • S/he should attend the May 5, 2007 follow-up meeting (details TBA).

Update March 8, 2007: A limited number of spots are still available. We will accept applications until the protege class is filled.

Commitments and Benefits

  • Proteges are expected to attend the summer academies in 2007 and 2008, and to participate in academic year follow-up, similar to the commitments of 2006 participants.
  • Proteges' districts will be expected to have similar commitments as the 2006 participating districts.
  • Protege benefits will be similar to that of 2006 participants.
  • The Protege academy will be 4-weeks long, held in June 2007 and 2008. These academies will be similar to the 2006 academy. Content will start with Force and Motion. The longer 4-week period will allow protege class to catch up with 2006 participants by the end of summer 2008.
  • Proteges will receive 4 graduate credits in physics for each summer and one credit in education for academic year work.
